Ok, so I’m working on this thing for my little sister. She turns 16 at the end of September, and she’s fully getting into High school mode. We were talking the other night and I started telling her things that I had learned that I wish I had known sooner. This gave me an idea for her birthday present (because she has everything, and I’m broke) I’m putting together a book of “Things I wish I’d known at sixteen”. So far I’ve got a couple but I could really use some advice and your own personal words of wisdom.

The list so far:

1] Life goes on. This is of the utmost importance to remember. No matter how ugly it seems, tomorrow always dawns fresh and new, with no mistakes in it.

2] It will grow out! I don’t know how many bad dye jobs and hair cuts I’ve had. Life is actually a lot like hair.

3] You will fall in and out of love a million times before you finally meet the right one. Enjoy it, languish in it, thrive on it. Falling in love is the next best thing to Marilyn Monroe.

4] Likewise you will break hearts and have yours broken. Don’t let that dictate who you are or what you will be. The heart will heal as long as you let it.

5] Be aware, but not too aware.

6] When life gets hard, we get chocolate. Seriously, my best memories are of three AM trips to Wally World with the Girls to get a sugar fix because I was feeling down. Those moments can’t be planed, but they will keep you warm when home seems far away.

7] Fall in love with yourself a little bit more everyday. If you don’t love and cherish you, how will anyone else?

8] In five or six years you will look back at who you are right now and cringe. Love her though, because she needs love. Never forget her, or you’ll repeat her mistakes.

9] Life is too short to dwell. The real things in life, the things you ought to worry about are never the things that you actually spend sleepless nights on.

10] Love your siblings almost as much as you love yourself. We will always be there as long as you allow.

11] Sisters know best, but make your own mistakes. Nothing worth knowing was ever learned the easy way.

12] We’re all works in progress, when the progress stops in general we die.

13] Relationships are fragile. Don’t handle them with kid gloves or they will never become strong. Don’t ignore them or they will fall apart. Nothing flourishes on its own, except weeds and certain kinds of mold. You don’t want moldy relationships!

14] There are two kinds of people in life, those who cry themselves to sleep and pine for what is gone, and those who sing in the shower and play hopscotch in the rain. I can’t tell you who to be, but I’ve been both and the latter have way more fun.

15] Do not wait for a boy to ask you to Prom, or homecoming, or any other dance. Don’t be afraid to go stag. It’s the most fun thing in the world.

16] Don’t be afraid to love to your fullest capacity. When we love deeply we may risk the most, but we learn the most too.

17] Be friends with most exboyfriends. You’ll miss them when the pain goes.

18] Don’t bind love to a box of what society claims is normal. What does society know? According to it I’m an unloveable freak.

19] MOISTURIZE! MOISTURIZE! MOISTURIZE! You skin will thank me.

I know I have more life experience than that, I’m drawing blanks though and its starting to feel repetitive.

I'm Smiling

I got my scholarship.

I shall be returning to school in September.

I have kept this news to myself for nearly a week.

Why?

Because It was something almost to precious to share.

I have become greedy with my happiness. Does that make sense?

I told Jay, and Skidata-lee, and my mother, and the Aunties… and a part of me wanted to run to the phone and tell Grandma.

She would be so proud… I know she would be so proud…

And knowing that makes the fact that shes not here so much harder.

I ach. It is a physical sort of pain that I try so hard to ignore by not talking about. I try to pretend I’m happy and well and not dying just a little bit every day…

Then it occurs to me we’re all dying a little bit every day.

I’m starting to fall for this person, this beautiful, wonderful, creative, lovely person who isn’t so very far away, who brings out the best in me, and laughs away the worst.

But I have sense this time.

I am gifted with the knowledge that to do anything about these feelings would ruin everything. We could never ever ever be as good together as we are right now.

Right now we are everything, we are our favorites, we are beautiful, and talented, and bitter sweet cynical.

Right now, this moment, we are living and loving and lovely.

And even though I hurt, even though I’m crying as I type this…

I’m smiling.
